K-9 Crime Fighters
The Austin Independent School District (AISD)
has four K-9 teams in their police department.
All four dogs are from The Netherlands and
purchased from Global Training Academy in
Somerset, Texas, which is just southwest of San
Antonio. Trained at Global, the K-9 teams
occasionally take advantage of a student holiday
and return to the Academy for additional training.

Two of the K-9 teams are detector dogs trained to locate both narcotics (marijuana,
cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines) and nitro cellulose powder, which is found in
firearms and some explosive devices. Officer David Stovall and Manna and Officer Troy
Mayes and Buddy work during school hours performing regular searches at secondary
campuses and presentations at elementary schools. Both dogs are very friendly as well
as kid-safe. All of the K-9 teams work at the request of campus officers and the school
administrator's request.
In addition to their AISD duties, the two detector K-9 teams (Manna and Buddy) also assist
APD patrol officers during the day (APD's K-9 Patrol currently works nights and is only
on-call during the day). In particular, they assist Robbery since they are trained to locate
weapons.

Manna is a four-year-old Flat-Coated Retriever who works with Officer David Stovall as a
detector dog. Manna joined the department in June 2003. She is a retriever, so she loves
to chase anything you are willing to throw. She is always ready to go and that drive is
what makes her so good at her detector work. Officer Stovall and Manna hope to
compete in the 2006 Texas Police Games.
Buddy is a six-year-old Springer Spaniel who works with Officer Troy Mayes as a detector
dog. Buddy joined the department in June 2001. Buddy has competed several at the Texas
Police Games and won a bronze medal in 2003 and 2004 for his detector dog work.
Eros is a three-year-old Dutch Shepherd who works with Officer Alex Phillips as a patrol
dog. Dutch Shepherds are physically similar to the Belgian Malinois; however, their coats
are usually brindle, although Eros is black.
Valco is a Belgian Malinois who has just joined AISD. He is currently training with Officer
Belinda Donofrio as a patrol dog and he is also trained in the detection of explosives
ordinance. Officer Donofrio has also just recently joined AISD K-9 as a handler, so they
are the newest K-9 team at AISD.
All AISD police dogs live at home with their handlers. The AISD K-9 handlers believe that
their dogs spending time at home is essential at building a stronger bond between them
and inspires the dogs to perform better for their handlers.
