The Austin Police Department has had a K-9 Patrol Unit since 1979. The K-9 Patrol Unit apprehends felony
suspects and performs evidence searches by searching for general human scent. In addition to K-9
Patrol duties, one of the police dogs is also certified to work with SWAT.
