K-9 Crime Fighters
Razzia is a German shepherd from Leerburg Kennels
trained in search-and-rescue and certified in Cadaver and
Tracking. Razzia's name is a german word that means "to
seek and find." Doug Dukes is her owner/handler, and
although Doug is a Lieutenant in the Austin Police
Department (APD), they are not a part of any APD K-9 Unit.
Most of their search-and rescue work is done on their own
time, but APD has supported Doug in the past when an
outside agency has requested Razzia's assistance for an
extraordinary event.
All humans shed tiny particles called "rafts" that drift off of us
constantly. Razzia's Tracking certification means that she is
able to locate specific individuals by following particles shed
from their body that have fallen to the ground. Thousands of
rafts float from us as we go about our day and come into
contact with the ground and surrounding area, creating a
track for Razzia to follow.
Razzia and Doug only respond to calls for assistance by
law enforcement agencies or fire/rescue agencies when
coordinated with law enforcement and do not simply
appear at a scene and say "here we are." Requests for
their help have come from law enforcement at the local,
state, and federal level and they have responded to calls all
over Texas and several times into Mexico. They are
members of Travis County Search and Rescue and
respond to calls with them as needed. To quote Doug:
"Make no mistake, I know who the agencies request when
they call us. It is not me, it is my dog. I am just a support
system for her."
Typically, Razzia and Doug are called by law enforcement
for assistance in locating a suspected grave of a murder
victim or a missing person. They provide closure to the
case and to a family. Doug does not charge for Razzia's
services, but he does appreciate it when an agency pays
for their expenses for their assistance.
In March 2005, Razzia won Overall Cadaver in the National
Detector Dog Trials for the United States Police Canine
Association held in Georgetown, Texas.
