K-9 Crime Fighters
K-9 Patrol currently uses two dog breeds in their Unit: the German Shepherd and the
Belgian Malinois. Each dog was selected for their working drives and potential, and it
just worked out that these two breeds dominate their Unit at this time.
Canine Information
When an APD police dog retires, he is usually adopted by his current handler or his
former police K-9 handler. If that is not possible, only an APD police officer is allowed
to adopt a retired police dog. Because of the dogs' highly specialized training, the City
of Austin does not allow civilians to adopt any police dogs.
