Dutch Shepherd Information
The Dutch Shepherd (aka the Hollandse Herdershond) was
originally a shepherd's dog. Among their many duties, they kept
the flocks from straying, worked together with other dogs when
larger flocks were involved, herded cows for milking, pulled
carts, and alerted farmers to strangers. They are versatile and
easy-to-train, so when the need for Dutch Shepherds to herd
sheep declined in the early 1900's, they transitioned to new jobs
in police and security, tracking, search-and-rescue, and
companion dogs to people with special needs.
Because of the efforts of the first Dutch Shepherd breed club,
Nederlandse Herdershond Club (MHC), in 1898, the breed standard
was set and the dog survives today as a very loyal and reliable
working dog.
The Dutch Shepherd is a wonderful dog for a number of reasons
including his temperament, working ability, and intelligence, but the
dog is also eye-catching with his brindle coloring. The usual color of
Dutch Shepherds is gold or silver. The gold can vary from light
sand-colored to chestnut red. The brindle is clearly present all over
the body and there is usually a black mask. The coat is usually
short-haired, but can also be long- or wire-haired.
