K-9 Crime Fighters
Bandit is an 11-year-old, 85-pound German Shepherd from
Czechoslovakia.  He has served with Officer Greg White for 6
years and has retired as of January 2008.  His handler has just
been promoted to Detective and Bandit is living at home with Det.
White and his family.

Bandit is very scent-driven and excels at searching for felony
suspects.  And his large size and strong working drives makes
him very effective at apprehension work.  He was one of two
SWAT-certified K-9's.

Bandit has a small poodle/chihuahua mix friend at home named
Jack, and Bandit is a great family dog with Greg's young children.
He really likes his Kong toy and is something of a gourmet in that
he doesn't like regular pet brand treats.  Bandit wants real beef
jerky.
Bandit
Greg and Bandit have worked some interesting calls over the years:

"Swamp Man"
- Bandit and Greg were searching by a creek near Harris Branch for the driver of a
stolen vehicle.  After a short vehicle pursuit, the driver had exited the vehicle and ran through some
neighborhood lawns towards a creek where the pursuing officer lost sight of him.  Bandit picked up
the suspect's scent right away, but Greg didn't see him and the suspect refused to come out when
called to surrender.  Bandit and Greg walked into the creek and, without realizing it, Greg ended up
standing directly over the suspect hidden in the water.  The suspect had pulled a large pile of grass
on top of himself and was lying down in the water completely covered.  Fortunately, Bandit quickly
realized there was someone hiding right underneath his handler and lunged back and bit the suspect
underwater, which caused the suspect to explode from under the grasses (and, incidentally, under
Greg) and create a vivid impression of a swamp creature come to life.

"Two Skunks" - Near 620 & Parmer Lane, Bandit and Greg were looking for a suspect involved in a
burglary of a residence.  They were moving along when suddenly a skunk surprised them by spraying
them both.  They were in the process of moving hastily backwards when a second skunk came at
them and sprayed them, this time causing Greg to fall back into cactus.  In Greg's words, "It was ugly."
They never found the suspect, since they immediately departed for Wal-Mart to get supplies for
Greg's recipe for skunk odor remover: 1 gal. distilled water, 1 lg. bottle anti-bacterial soap, & 2 lg.
boxes baking soda.  Mix together, apply to dog's coat, and let dry.  Wash off after the mixture is caked
into fur.

"Bleach" - Bandit and Greg were searching a building housing a gaming business for a suspect who
had burglarized several other buildings earlier in the night.  A police officer arrived to check on the
alarm that was set off and heard the suspect banging on the machines inside, so the officer called for
a K-9 team.  When Bandit and Greg arrived, they announced themselves and the suspect ran out the
back of the building and saw the perimeter set-up by police officers outside.  The suspect then ran
back into the building and ended up locking himself in a bathroom, where he found and used bleach
to try to mask his odor at the door's threshold.  Even over the bleach, Bandit picked up the suspect's
scent and led Greg straight to the bathroom.  Bandit jumped off the ground when he put his nose at
the door and got a good whiff of bleach, but he knew there was a bad guy in there and refused to leave
the door.  The door had to be breached by kicking it in, and Bandit was able to run in and engage the
combative suspect and help take him into custody.

"Weak Ceilings" - Bandit and Greg responded to a burglary-in-progress call along with another K-9
team (Jimmie & Ammo) at a convenience store in northeast Austin.  Police officers already on-scene
reported hearing the suspect crawling through the ceiling.  While Greg and Jimmie were in front of the
store discussing how best to deploy, the bad guy suddenly crashed through the ceiling and landed
directly in front of a pair of enormously surprised police dogs, Bandit and Ammo.  The suspect
immediately surrendered.
