K-9 Crime Fighters
In his handler's own words:
He is the largest dog in the Unit. He is 85 pounds and still gaining. We think he may be good
for the horse patrol instead of K-9.
He is a very friendly dog that gets along well with the whole family at home. He is very ball
crazy and a serious chow hound. He gets in trouble all the time in my back yard when he tries
to play with any toy or object left out by the kids. He sheepishly looks at me, knowing he is
to leave them alone. When I catch him trying, he drops it and pretends he never did it. He
never barks at anyone new at the house, but on the street he goes off on a suspect like a
different dog. He absolutely adores my wife, acting like a baby to get her attention. At 85-90
pounds, he is a little big trying to get on her lap!
Blitz

We received a car jacking call. A suspect stole a truck at gunpoint “I Give Up; I Don’t Want To Mess With That Big Dog!” - and fled the scene.
Officers located the truck and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The suspect crashed the truck and ran on foot into a large wooded area circled by a tall
chain link fence that the suspect jumped over. When I arrived, I walked with Blitz to meet with the officers at the point where the suspect had
jumped over. As we were walking, Blitz went into odor towards the woods and a tall fence, but this was a long way from where the officers were. I
trusted Blitz’s nose and let him guide me. Suddenly a scared voice yelled out on the other side of the fence. “I give up; I don’t want to mess with that
big dog!” The suspect was in the heavy brush completely hidden with a 10’ chain link fence between us and him. There was no way to get Blitz
over such a tall fence, but the suspect crawled over the fence to us and gave up!
Tunnel Rats - We received a call to assist in a vehicle pursuit of a suspect that had broken into a residence and fled the scene. The suspect bailed
out of the vehicle on foot and ran into a neighborhood to hide. A pistol was found in the vehicle, so we did not know if the suspect was still armed or
not. This was in the middle of the afternoon, with the temperature over 100 degrees. Blitz took me to a hole under a house. He stuck his nose in
the hole and gave strong alerts. Officers surrounded the house. No one was home, so he called repeatedly for the suspect to come out from under
the house. We checked all angles and could not see anyone under there. Since we did not know where the suspect was hiding, I had to send Blitz
under the house to find him. I was not going to let Blitz go under alone because the suspect might have been armed. The problem was that the
space was so low; I had to take off my duty belt and go under with a t-shirt and pistol only. Blitz is so tall that he had to crawl on his belly as he
searched. I crawled with him until Blitz came to some pipes. He barked and scratched to get behind the pipes. That is when the suspect yelled out
loud and gave up. When Blitz and I got back outside, we were totally covered in brown dirt from head to toe. Turned out that the dirt under the house
was like a powder and with the sweat from the heat, all of it clung to us and made us look like some tunnel rats from Vietnam .
He Is On The Roof! - We assisted in a home invasion call. Several suspects followed some dancers home and invaded their home with pistols
and knives. Seven residents were injured in the robbery. One was shot and one knifed. The suspects even beat the family dog with a club. When
officers arrived, two suspects ran from the area. Blitz searched the area and found several pieces of evidence on the ground. Blitz then gave me
scent indications in an area behind a house. I could not find anything and was stumped. Blitz continued to indicate in the area. He then lifted his
nose high in the air. I got a ladder and checked on top of a shed, but nothing! I then checked the roof of the house with my flashlight. I thought I
could see a dark object out of place on the roof, but could not make it out from the distance. I called for the police helicopter to check the house roof
for me. They used their infrared vision and spotted the suspect in a corner of the roof. He gave up without incident. Due to his arrest, other
suspects were eventually identified.
