APD's K-9 Patrol Unit offered a class to Citizen's Police Academy alumni and current
students. Officer DJ Lahr, the Unit's canine trainer, and Officer Jimmie Davenport, the
Unit's tactical trainer instructed the class about police dog training and deployment, as
well as information about what K-9 officers do while on-the-job.

The first K-9 Class was fortunate in that they were the only class able to put on bite sleeves
and suits to experience hits by the police dogs under very safe and controlled conditions.
The students were also able to engage in scenarios using simunition (real bullets
containing paint) in realistically created situations where some of the students were bad
guys and some were officers. This was a fun experience for everyone, but was not offered
in later classes due to concerns about possible injury to civilians.
