All K-9 Patrol teams are nationally certified as police canines before they work the
streets of Austin. A patrol dog is certified to search buildings and areas for
unauthorized persons, search for evidence dropped or hidden by suspects, pursue and
apprehend suspects fleeing a scene, and protect his handler.
*Years of service is adjusted annually in June and may indicate a slightly shorter or longer period of
actual street duty.

APD's K-9 Patrol is headed by
Sgt. Mike Fitzgerald. He is too
busy overseeing the K-9 Teams
to work a police dog, so he is the
only K-9 officer without a canine.
