K-9 Crime Fighters
Stuka was a 65-pound Belgian Malinois
from The Netherlands who served in
APD's K-9 Patrol from 1994 to 2000.  He
worked with his handler, Officer Jimmie
Davenport, for 7 years and had at least
63 arrests during his career with APD.
Stuka retired to live with his former
handler.

We like to think that all dogs will live
forever, and Stuka seems to be making
that wish come true.  As of July 2007,
he's still very much a part of Officer
Davenport's family at 14 years of age.

Sadly, Stuka passed away near the
beginning of 2008 after a long and
productive life.

"The Water Princess"  Stu hated to get wet and even a little water on his paws caused
him anxiety.  So one night, we were searching for a suspect who had fled from officers into
a local park.  It had rained hard just an hour or so earlier and the creek within the park was
running swiftly.  We'd been searching for nearly an hour with no luck.  I got some interest
from Stu in some areas, but then it would be quickly lost.  I was about to give up when I
walked close by the creek.  As we neared a bend in the creek, Stu suddenly jumped into
the rushing waters and dog-paddled to a clump of brush that was stuck in a bend.  The
water was easily about 4-foot deep and rushing by fast enough to be deadly if you fell in.  I
KNEW the suspect was close if this water-hating dog wanted to get wet.  I looked closely
at the clump of bobbing branches and saw the suspect using the brush as a shield.  I
guess the suspect saw some Indian trick in the movies.....but it didn't fool Stuka that night.

"The Bloody Knife"
Police dogs are commonly used to locate evidence that was
discarded from the crime scene by the fleeing suspect.  Stu and I were called to a brutal
murder scene hours after it occurred.  A knife was used to stab a woman to death and
when the suspect fled, he threw it into a nearby wooded area.  Investigators and officers
looked for the bloody knife for over an hour.  After no luck in locating it, they called me to the
scene to try and locate it.  Blood is a beacon for a dog's nose.  Within 15 minutes of
searching, he located the bloody knife in the woods and laid down looking at it as he was
trained to do.  He later got a cheeseburger for his efforts.
