| Congratulations to Officer Shaun Mierl. He and his wife Julie are the proud parents of Trenton Shaun Mierl, 6 lbs. 5 oz., born on October 7, 2005. All of the Mierls are doing fine, but Chase is ready to go back to work! |
| Arrest Highlights |
| Arrests made in the month of October include: |
| “Ammo” Finds Suspect Armed with a Handgun Officer Davenport & Ammo had a close call in Charlie sector. A suspect fled on foot after shooting another person in the leg. Ammo found the suspect behind a shed, and the suspect was still armed with a pistol in his hands. Ammo immediately apprehended the suspect, protecting Davenport and his backup officer. Due to Ammo, neither the officers nor the suspect used deadly force. “Draco” Finds Man Who Drove Stolen Truck Into Side Of House Officer Lahr & Draco assisted Travis County deputies looking for a man accused of domestic violence. A deputy spotted him and a car chase ensued ending when the suspect drove a stolen truck down a dead end road and into the bedroom of a house. Fortunately, the home’s occupants were in another room and escaped potentially lethal injury. The suspect fled on foot and Draco found him hiding amidst some outbuildings behind a business near IH-35 and Braker Lane. “Bandit” Stops A Peeping Tom Officer White and Bandit were called to a window peeper in Edward sector. When they arrived, White and other officers found a suspect peeking into a window and masturbating outside. The suspect fled when he saw officers, but he ended up running right towards Bandit. Upon seeing Bandit, the suspect stopped running and gave up. “Bandit” Finds Suspect Wanted For Drug Possession Officer White and Bandit found a suspect with crack cocaine who had fled from officers. Bandit found the suspect hiding in a thickly wooded area.“Bandit” Helps With A Burglary SuspectOfficer White & Bandit apprehended a suspect in a burglary of a business. Officers were looking for a suspect vehicle wanted in the burglary when Officer White saw the vehicle in Charlie sector and made a high vehicle risk stop, using Bandit as backup. The suspect was arrested for the burglary. |

| Officer Eveleth and Vuk are getting close to taking their Patrol K-9 Certification test. Vuk still has building searches to master, but is doing very well on obedience, area searching, and criminal apprehension. Vuk’s previously injured leg has recovered well and he shows no side effects from the injury. |
| Community |
| Officer Eveleth and Vuk participated in the Blessing of the Animals at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at Windsor and Exposition on Sunday, October 2nd. During the ceremony, Vuk was sprinkled with holy water along with other service animals. This service is usually performed around the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, who is known as a protector and lover of all creatures. |
| Duke, a German Shepherd, actively served in APD's K-9 Patrol from 1996 through 2000. He had two handlers: Sgt. Carl Pardinek from 1996-1997 and Officer DJ Lahr from 1998-2000. He was an excellent patrol canine and possessed all of the qualities K-9 Patrol looks for in a police dog. After diagnosed with a degenerative hip and spine disease, he retired and was adopted by Officer Salsbury of the APD. For many years, Duke lived in a home on the lake, where he loved to swim, play with the neighborhood children, and terrorize the local cats. He had one last police patrol ride in his former partner’s K-9 truck with flashing lights andsirens as well as a police escort, before he passed away this month while |

| Snake Vaccine For Canines A vaccine is now available to protect dogs from certain types of snake venom. The vaccine protects dogs from the deadly venom of the Western diamondback rattlesnake and gives some cross-protection against copperheads, another poisonous snake common to Texas.
