K-9 Crime Fighters
The University of Texas at Austin police department (UTPD) has
two K-9 teams. Both dogs are male Belgian Malinoises originally
from The Netherlands. The canines were purchased from Global
Training Academy in Somerset, Texas, and each K-9 team went
through a six-week training program at Global. Both teams are
dual-purpose and certified in patrol work and explosives detection.
Both K-9 teams work normal patrol duties at UT in addition to their
K-9 duties and train whenever staffing allows. One team works
during the day, while the other works at night. The K-9 teams
either train together or with other agency canines. The UTPD
stores an explosives magazine to utilize as training aids in
addition to the full body suit and bite sleeves worn by officers in
decoy training. Each K-9 team certifies annually through the U.S.
Patrol Canine Association in both patrol dog and explosives
detection.

Robby and Officer Jason Taylor have worked together since
2002. They work the nightshift, so Robby is not as used to
dealing with humans, but he is still very personable with
individuals he knows. Robby is six years old as of 2006.
Maatje and Officer Robert Stock have worked together since
2004. They work the dayshift and are in the UT police building
during the "normal" workday, so Maatje is very used to contact
with humans. Maatje is four years old as of 2006.
Both dogs live with their handlers at home and get along well with other family members,
including other pets. Like most malinoises, the dogs are highly driven at work and at play,
so are, no doubt, a handful at home.
Anyone who has any questions about the UTPD K-9 Unit should contact Sgt. Robert Stock
at stockk9@mail.utexas.edu.
Both UTPD K-9 teams
certified in Angleton, TX
in February 2007
through the NNDA in
explosives and patrol.
They competed against
65 teams from Texas,
Alabama, Louisiana, and
Oklahoma. Robby and
Officer Taylor took 2nd
place in explosives
detection. And Maatje
and Officer Stock took
1st place in explosives
detection, 2nd place in
patrol, and were awarded
Top Dog Team.
Congratulations to them
all for doing such a great
job!
